Driver With NJ Plates Shoots Trooper On NY Highway; Suspect On Run

A New York State Police trooper is recovering after being shot on a Long Island highway.

The incident happened on the Southern State Parkway in West Hempstead, in the westbound lanes near exit 17, late Wednesday night, Oct. 30.

According to police, a trooper exchanged gunfire with a suspect before the suspect fled the scene. 

The trooper was taken to a hospital and was listed in stable condition early Thursday, Oct. 31. Authorities did not elaborate on the nature of their injuries.

Police said the suspect was a dark skinned man driving possibly a black Dodge Charger with temporary New Jersey license plates 997636T. The vehicle had custom matte gray, dual exhaust tips.

Southern State Parkway was closed westbound near the scene for an extended period of time.

No suspects had been publicly identified or arrested as of early Thursday.
